Today in WMH: 1824: Don’t Follow the Maestro.

5/7 Today in Weird Music History: 1824.  Ludwig van Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 9 (“Choral”) is premiered in Vienna.  Beethoven, completely deaf, stood on stage beating time.  The performers were instructed to follow Beethoven’s assistant conductor, Michael Umlauf.
