Today in WMH: Ways to Be Popular

Image7/17 Today in Weird Music History. There are many ways to be popular and make your statement in the musical world.  This day in history recorded three of them:

  1. King 1717 King George I of England, worried about his popularity with his new English subjects, stages an open-air party and concert featuring Handel’s Water Music. The event probably made Handel more beloved than the King, however.
  2. In 1722 Georg Philipp Telemann is censured by Hamburg officials for allowing his music to be played in a public tavern.
  3. In 1967, Jimi Hendrix makes the wise decision to quit as the opening act for the Monkees.
