Today in WMH: How Many is Too Many?

Image7/16 Today (again yesterday) in Weird Music History: 1782. After hearing W.A. Mozart’s Singspiel-Opera, The Abduction from the Seraglio (Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail), Emperor Joseph II of the Austro-Hungarian Empire had this advice for the composer:

“Too many notes, my dear Mozart.”

To which Mozart replied back:

“Exactly as many as are needed, your Majesty.”

History records that Mozart would go on writing “too many” notes.

It’s the Three Bears approach to composition. “That version has too few notes. That version has too many. But THIS version is just right!”

    I’m sure Mozart said that.
