Today in WMH: Dead, But Not Buried

Image5/27 Today in Weird Music History, 1840.  Although violin virtuoso Niccolo Paganini died on this date in 1840, he would not be “truly” laid to rest for another 56 years.  While on his deathbed, he sent a priest away who was about to offer him last rites. Paganini felt he was not that close to death, but died several days later.  Because of this lack of Last Rites, and rumors that his talent was aided by an association with the devil, he was denied burial by the Church until 1876.  But that was not the end.  His son was convinced to disinter the body for a viewing in 1893.  Finally, Paganini was laid to rest in Parma in 1896.

Oh my goodness, surely these things should not happen now! That is very interesting though.
