Composer and piano virtuoso Franz Liszt boasts after a private performance that he is only one of two pianists in the entire world who can play a passage at the proper tempo. Georges Bizet was not the “other pianist” he had in mind when the future composer of Carmen rose, moved to the piano, and proceeded to play the passage Liszt had just demonstrated perfectly from memory. Ouch!
