Evidently, the theme of his opera, The Prisoner (Il Prigioniero), still touched a few nerves. Set during the Spanish Inquisition, the opera concludes with The Grand Inquisitor asking, “Why do you want to leave us now, on the very eve of your salvation?” To which the Prisoner whispers, “Freedom?”
