King Ludwig II of Bavaria saves Richard Wagner’s career when he presents his signet ring to Wagner as a promise to be his patron, thus bankrolling the Ring Cycle, Tristan and Isolde, and Die Meistersingers. The king had enough money left over to build Neuschwanstein Castle (above) as his personal playground.
