Today in WMH: A Statement Against Racism.

4/9 Today in Weird Music History: 1939.  75,000 attend a performance sponsored by Eleanor Roosevelt.  The First Lady sponsored the Easter Sunday concert by opera star Marian Anderson at the Lincoln Memorial to protest racial discrimination.  The event was precipitated the fact that, on the basis of her skin color, Marian Anderson was denied use of Washington’s Constitution Hall, owned and administered by the Daughters of the American Revolution.  Secretary of the Interior, Harold L. Ickes, aptly proclaimed in his introduction:

“Genius draws no color line.”
