Today in WMH: They Thought His Score Markings Were Secret Code…

3/25 Today in Weird Music History: 1918.  German maestro Karl Muck is arrested in Boston as an enemy alien. The conductor of the Boston Symphony on and off since 1906 was arrested based on his past ties to the Kaiser, and on false rumors spread by a newspaper to increase sales.  After the arrest, police also suspected that his markings in the score of the St. Matthew Passion were code indicative of pro-German activity.  A good example of how assumptions can allow things to get easily out of hand.  For more on this fascinating story, see:
