3/23 Today in Weird Music History: 1943. The death of Joseph Schllinger, composition teacher to the stars. He taught George Gershwin (while he was composing Porgy and Bess) Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Carmine Coppola and Leon Theremin, among others. Schillinger’s System of Musical Composition was largely pooh-poohed by the establishment, but ironically many of his techniques were later “discovered” by others considered pioneers (Babbitt, Xenakis, etc.).
