3/16 Today in Weird Music History: 1947.  President Harry S. Truman’s daughter, Margaret, makes her professional radio debut singing with the Detroit Symphony.  She would sing professionally for about a decade, usually to mixed reviews.  One unfavorable review in the Washington Post mentioned that Truman was

“extremely attractive on the stage… [but] cannot sing very well. She is flat a good deal of the time. And still cannot sing with anything approaching professional finish.”

This drew a famous written response to the reviewer from her father, who was serving his second term as President of the United States:

“Some day I hope to meet you. When that happens you’ll need a new nose, a lot of beefsteak for black eyes, and perhaps a supporter below!”
