Today in WMH: Special Papal Edition!

Image
3/13 Special Papal Edition of Weird Music History.  Submitted by Shannon Cline, Executive Director of Piffaro, The Renaissance Band.
Here’s something for Weird Music History especially for today: in 1565 the Council of Trent was about to ban music from the Mass because the source material was “lascivious” pop songs. Then they heard Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli, gave it 2 papal thumbs up, and it was performed at the coronation of every new pope until 1963.  Here’s a link to this beautiful piece: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSo8rRn-vEA&feature=youtu.be
Thanks, Shannon!
