Today in WMH: J.S. Bach becomes cool again

3/11 Today in Weird Music History: 1829.  Felix Mendelssohn conducts a revival performance of J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion in Berlin.  Since his death in 1750, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach was largely unknown and underappreciated.  Mendelssohn’s championing of the Baroque master is widely regarded as the reason Bach’s genius came back into the public attention and placed upon the pedestal on which it remains today.
