2/20 Today in Weird Music History: 1626. This is the burial day of England’s great Renaissance composer, John Dowland. Dead and buried, but not gone, nor relegated to the bookshelves, either. Dowland’s music and poetry continues to inspire. Sting recently recorded an album of Dowland songs. Other artists finding inspiration include Percy Grainger, Benjamin Britten, and Elvis Costello. Dowland and his music was a recurring theme for sci-fi author Phillip K. Dick, who used the penname Jack Dowland as well as Dowland’s music as book titles and plot devices. That’s quite a legacy!
