Today in WMH: Two degrees of separation

2/11 Today in Weird Music History: 1840.  Donizetti’s La Fille du Regiment premieres to great success.  While this is an important event, the weird part comes with the connection to many of the 20th century’s greatest composers. One of Donezetti’s sopranos that night was Marie Boulanger.  Her granddaughter Nadia would become the most important composition teacher of the 20th century.  Among her students were Aaron Copland, Daniel Barenboim, Astor Piazolla, Virgil Thomson, Thea Musgrave, Gian Carlo Menotti, Phillip Glass, and hundreds more (over 600 from America alone).  Here’s an attempt at a list of some of her students: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_students_of_Nadia_Boulanger
