Today in WMH: A Donizetti Diagnosis

1/28 Today in Weird Music History: 1846. After being examined by doctors in Paris, opera composer Gaetano Donizetti is diagnosed with “cerebro-spinal degeneration of syphilitic origin.” Three days later, he is forcibly removed from his hotel by a servant, his nephew, and a doctor specializing in venereal disease.  He was held against his will for 17 months at a French sanitorium until rescued by other family members.
