Today in WMH: The “Bloodiest” Opera Premieres

1/25 Today in Weird Music History: 1909. The “bloodiest opera ever” is premiered. Richard Strauss’s Elektra is a one-act expressionist take on a classical Greek tragedy.  Opera star Placido Domingo attributes modern-day success of this opera to the popular horror genre.  For more, see this interesting NPR feature with video, audio and text:
