Today in WMH: Copland a Commie?

1/18 Today in Weird Music History: 1952.  Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait is pulled from the Inaugural Concert for President Dwight D. Eisenhower on the grounds that Copland may have had communist sympathies.  Copland, perhaps the most “American” of all composers had publicly declared that cultural exchanges with other countries could promote peace and understanding.  That, and a well-circulated photo alongside Dmitri Shostakovich put Copland in the cross-hairs of Senator Joseph McCarthy’s Un-American Activities Committee.
