Today in Weird Music History, 1/8. Shostakovich Reloaded

1/8 Today in Weird Music History: 1963.  Shostakovich’s opera Katerina Izmailova is premiered in Moscow.  The work is actually a reworked version of Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, Shostakovich’s opera that was censored by the Soviet authorities in 1936:

“Singing is replaced by shrieking. The music quacks, hoots, growls and gasps to express the love scenes as naturally as possible…fidgety, screaming neurotic music… This is playing at abstruseness – and such games can only finish badly.”– Pravda “Muddle Instead of Music” on Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District
