One of the amazements of being reminded of historical events can be the realization of just how close in time they are. My dad was born in 1912, my mother in 1918. The Russian of the Tsars seems so far removed, yet it isn’t at all.
And it occurs to me – perhaps those who fuss about our musicans being involved in making political statements (along the whole spectrum of opinion) could stand a reminder that art and politics have confronted each other for centuries.
